Born in Russell, Kansas, Bob Dole, also known as Robert Joseph Dole, graduated from the University of Kansas, where he majored in Pre-Law. He then went on to earn his law degree from the University of Arizona. He fought in Italy during World War II, where he was severely injured by German machine gun fire. The hospital where he recovered was later renamed in his honor. He was elected to the Kansas City House of Representatives in 1950, and then to the United States House of Representatives in 1960. He became Senate Minority Leader in 1987, and then served as Senate Majority Leader from 1995-1996. He was also a United States Senator from Kansas from 1969 to 1996. He was Gerald Ford's Vice Presidential choice during Mr. Ford's failed bid for presidency in 1976. He attempted to gain the Republican nomination for President unsuccessfully in both 1980 and 1988. He finally won the nomination in 1996, but lost the presidential race to Bill Clinton.
